My great grandmother passed away a week ago today. Lillian Arlene “Tootie” Diehl was 97 years old. I was in Kansas for Tegan’s 1st Birthday so I got to go to her funeral on Saturday. My memories with her are fairly recent. What I remember about her is that she always loved sincerely. Even if she couldn’t remember my name, she would hug me tight nonetheless.
About three years ago, my great grandpa died. Before his funeral, I went and sat with grandma in the front row. She couldn’t understand, couldn’t comprehend what life would be like without the man she had been with for most of her life. We sat there and cried with eachother until the funeral started. In some way I felt like the tears I shed helped lift part of her burden.
A little over a year ago, she moved into my grandparents home. One day I went to sit with her and brought over “My Fair Lady.” I set up my computer in the living room and the first thing grandma said was “Are we watching a picture show?” :) A couple months ago, I got my computer out to show her pictures. She was a little confused about the laptop and innocently asked where I put the paper in. (She thought it was a typewriter.)
